It doesn’t smell as good as it used to in Zazu
Author: Yun Koole
In our beloved country, we are so careful of the environment and very passionate about sustainability too. Our planet is our home, and we really try our best to take care of it and fix what is broken. Every Zazuyan contributes to that by waste sorting, recycling, and composting daily.

Waste sorting happens by separating all kinds of materials in different trash cans at home. When a bin is full, you bring it to a waste sorting point, where you can throw it in the right waste container. Such a sorting point is to be found in every neighbourhood. The recycling of waste happens in huge waste management centres.
Composting happens in every home. In every backyard of every home, you will find a huge container with remains of vegetable and fruit waste. People fill it with green waste daily. After a while, you can use it for planting in your vegetable garden. Usually, it takes six months for green waste to compost. Composting is not mandatory, but highly recommended. It's because of the general concerns and common interests of Zazu.
In order to help everyone, sort properly, Zazu introduced the so-called “smell police”. It is a service of volunteers who walk through neighbourhoods and check if everyone does it correctly.

Lately, people have been worse at sorting and composting. Laziness has been a huge factor in this matter and the smell police have been worried about the people who don’t compost and sort properly. They are concerned about the fact that their compatriots care less and less about the environment and their planet, their home. The smell police went into action and took some measures to address the matter and try to solve the problem.

One of the measures is to organise info sessions about the importance of waste management. Another one is to spread flyers with motivational texts that reminds people to sort and compost properly. A quote on one of the flyers is “Sort right today to have a better tomorrow”. “If you don’t want to do it for you, do it for your future grandchildren”, is another quote from a flyer.

The campaign is still going on, but you really see a difference in the attitude of the Zazuyans. After having been informed about the importance of sorting and composting properly, people took more and more responsibility for the planet. The ones who didn’t see the bigger picture before, started to see it slowly but steadily. The measures were a wake-up call.

Hopefully, you are composting, sorting and recycling well!
Sort right today to have a better tomorrow!
